Summary

This PDF presents an analysis of the concept of *shuddhopayoga* (pure consciousness) as described in Acharya Kundakunda's *Pravachanasara*. It distinguishes between two types of people: those who perform inauspicious (*ashubha*) actions and those who perform auspicious (*shubha*) actions. Both types of actions, driven by *ashubhopayoga* and *shubhopayoga* respectively, lead to bondage and mental tension, though the tension is milder for those performing auspicious actions. In contrast, actions performed with *shuddhopayoga* are free from attachment, aversion, and mental tension, leading to liberation. A person who attains this state is called an *arahant* or *kevali*. The document presents several verses from the *Pravachanasara* with translations and grammatical analysis. One verse states that *dharma* is equanimity (*samata*), which is a state of the soul free from delusion (*moha*) and affliction (*klesha*). Another explains that the soul, by nature subject to transformation, becomes pure when it transforms into a pure state. A verse describes that a person who is pure in activity attains supreme peace, while one engaged in auspicious actions attains heavenly pleasure. The text further explains that the happiness of those adorned with *shuddhopayoga* is supreme, self-generated, beyond the senses, incomparable, infinite, and uninterrupted. A *shramana* who has understood the scriptures, is endowed with restraint and austerity, has abandoned attachment, and regards pleasure and pain equally, is said to possess *shuddhopayoga*. The document also clarifies that a *kevali* (omniscient being) does not grasp or abandon objects but perceives and knows everything completely without being transformed. Their knowledge arises from the destruction of karmas. The text concludes by stating that those who do not have faith in the supreme happiness of those who have destroyed the destructive karmas

Conclusion

This analysis demonstrates that the text’s core implication is the delineation of a progressive spiritual path culminating in *shuddhopayoga* (pure consciousness). The outcome for the practitioner is a state of absolute mental tranquility, free from the bondage of karmic reactions and the attendant mental stress (*kheda*). By transcending both auspicious and inauspicious mental states, the individual attains the status of an *arhat* or *kevali*, characterized by omniscience and the experience of infinite, uninterrupted bliss. The document thus provides a grammatical and philosophical framework for understanding how detachment from sensory objects and the cessation of attachment (*raga-dvesha*) lead directly to this liberated state, offering a definitive solution to the cycle of suffering inherent in worldly existence.
