तेरापंथ की आधारशिलाः अनुशासन का धर्मचक्र

Vol. 61 · No. 02February - 2013pp. 23-24Hindi

Summary

The Terapanth Dharma Sangh, a distinct Jain tradition, has established a unique identity through its constitution, which prioritizes a single guru and a single code of discipline. Discipline is not imposed but accepted through inner reflection. The Sangh balances individual freedom with collective responsibility, blending democratic and unitary principles. Discipline is essential for order, requiring a balance between personal liberty and community. The Sangh emphasizes vigilance over rigidity or leniency, focusing on maintaining order. Five foundations of self-discipline are discussed: limits of personal freedom and control, limits of ideological freedom and restraint, tolerance, faith in heart and nature transformation, and non-commitment. The disciplinarian must use a mix of reproach and encouragement, rewarding discipline and punishing indiscipline while offering opportunities for repentance. Discipline should not destroy freedom but allow its flame to burn alongside equality. The Sangh's success stems from its acharyas adapting discipline to contemporary conditions, sometimes using silence or forgiveness to awaken self-discipline. Discipline requires surrendering ego and attachment, not for others but for one's own development. Ego and attachment can fracture an organization. The fourth acharya, Shri Jayacharya, taught against hypocrisy and obstinacy, advocating forgiveness and obedience to the guru. The Sangh discourages ego and attachment, promoting total surrender to the Sangh and its leader. The Marayada Mahotsav, initiated by Shri Jayacharya, annually reaffirms commitment to the Sangh's constitutional principles, symbolizing its foundation and the wheel of discipline that keeps the Sangh vibrant. The hope is that these lamps of self-discipline will illuminate every member's inner mind, guiding them toward self-welfare.

Conclusion

The document underscores that the Terapanth Dharma Sangh’s enduring success stems from its unique blend of individual freedom and collective discipline, rooted in a constitution prioritizing a single guru and code of conduct. This system fosters self-discipline through voluntary acceptance rather than imposition, balancing personal autonomy with community harmony. The implications are profound: by integrating flexibility with firm principles, the Sangh has achieved Himalayan heights of growth and depth of spiritual practice. The outcomes include a resilient organization where discipline is maintained through compassion, correction, and opportunities for reform, not rigid punishment. This approach has enabled the Sangh to adapt across time and place while preserving its core identity, ensuring its continued relevance and vitality in the modern era.
