विकास के आधार स्तंभ-मर्यादा और अनुशासन
By डॉ. साध्वीं कुन्दन रेखा
Summary
The article emphasizes that discipline and restraint are the foundation of cultural brightness and longevity, with nature itself operating through rules and order. It argues that curbing excessive desires and endless wishes is only possible through these qualities, which refine tendencies, create beautiful behaviors, and build organized societies. Discipline acts as a compass determining life’s direction, while boundaries guide relationships, harmony, and development, preventing deviation. The current era, however, neglects these principles, mistaking licentiousness for freedom and fragmenting values. Inhumane crimes target families, while attraction to power, prestige, and wealth erodes quality. Ideological and emotional pollution, blind imitation of Western culture, and deceit have become common in behavior. Lust and desire are expressed without hesitation, with horrific acts like abduction and rape questioning morality. A gang rape incident symbolizing boundarylessness shook the world. Addiction, fashion, and exhibitionism weaken individuals, harming society and national strength. India, the birthplace of disciplined life, is losing its heritage. An example illustrates this: an Indian returning from a party at 2 a.m. in England asked a taxi driver why he stopped at a red light when no one was watching. The driver replied, “This is not India; self-discipline is the identity of this country’s citizens.” Sensitivity and tenderness of heart, once symbols of vitality, are fading, with respect and dedication between generations disappearing. In this toxic environment, self-reflection is necessary. Jain scriptures state that disciplining the soul through restraint and austerity is best, making one venerable everywhere. A life bound by discipline and adorned with boundaries is the fundamental mantra of development, distinguishing humans from animals. This power can reveal the soul’s true form like a mirror; without it, life is insipid. Discipline is the light of life and the sky of love and sympathy. Disciplined boundaries act as an impenetrable armor, protecting people from adversities. Just as a small hook controls an elephant, a small lamp dispels darkness, a small mantra subdues divine power, and a small gem is valued,
Conclusion
The document underscores that the erosion of discipline and boundaries in modern society has led to a crisis of values, manifesting in rising crime, moral decay, and a loss of cultural identity. The text argues that restoring these principles is not merely nostalgic but essential for individual and collective progress, using the Terapanth religious order as a living model of how strict adherence to rules fosters harmony, spiritual growth, and organizational strength. The implications are clear: without a conscious return to self-discipline and respect for limits, society risks further fragmentation and weakness. The outcome, as presented, is that embracing these ancient guidelines offers a proven path to reclaiming dignity, preventing societal collapse, and achieving sustainable development, making them indispensable for both personal fulfillment and national vitality.
