तेरापंथ का प्राण केन्द्र -मर्यादा महोत्सव

Vol. 61 · No. 02February - 2013pp. 19-20Hindi

Summary

The text discusses the evolution of human social behavior and its application within the Jain monastic tradition, particularly focusing on the reforms of Acharya Bhikshu. It begins by noting that while all living beings have a will to live, humans uniquely value the lives of others. This need for coexistence led to the formation of societies, which require boundaries, whether constitutional or self-imposed, to allow space for others. In ancient India, an ascetic culture involved saints living in isolation. Lord Mahavira emphasized communal spiritual practice but did not prohibit solitary wandering, setting criteria like endurance and physical strength for those who chose it. Over time, the monastic order fragmented into smaller groups, weakening the communal spirit. Approximately 2,225 years after Mahavira, Acharya Bhikshu was born. After careful study, he joined a major Jain sect but soon felt its practices did not align with his ideals of renunciation. His attempts at reform failed, leading him to leave the sect. Initially not intending to start a new order, his practice attracted followers. Acharya Bhikshu revised conduct and thought, recognizing that group consciousness was essential for a community's survival. He established strict discipline, notably banning the prevalent practice of disciples creating their own disciples, which had led to competition and diluted spiritual standards. He decreed that all initiates would be disciples of the Acharya alone, establishing a centralized authority. He also emphasized uniformity in conduct, thought, and practice, believing that differences in these would cause the order to disintegrate. While some might see this as authoritarian, the text distinguishes between social systems, where individual freedom is paramount, and religious orders, where surrender is crucial for spiritual progress. Acharya Bhikshu respected individual freedom to leave the order but required those who stayed to honor the central authority. This led to the creation of codes of conduct, first established on Magh Shukla 7, which later became an annual Marryada Mahotsav (Code of Conduct Festival). This festival, continuing for about 149 years, involves collective acceptance of the codes.

Conclusion

The document underscores that the core implication of this monastic tradition is the necessity of group discipline (samuhacharita) for spiritual progress, as demonstrated by Acharya Bhikshu's reforms. The outcome was the establishment of a centralized system with one Acharya, one conduct, and one thought, preventing fragmentation seen in other Jain orders. By instituting the Maryada Mahotsav, a yearly collective reaffirmation of boundaries, the tradition ensures unity and adaptability while respecting individual freedom. This system balances personal autonomy with communal commitment, showing that for a religious order, submission to a shared framework is not authoritarianism but the foundation for sustained spiritual practice and organizational integrity.
