जीवन का मौलिक आधार मर्यादा

Summary

The text discusses the fundamental importance of discipline and boundaries (maryada) in individual, social, and natural life. It argues that nature itself functions within limits; when these are breached, as in tsunamis, floods, or wildfires, destruction follows. Similarly, in human life, the breakdown of discipline leads to chaos in personal, social, and national contexts. The body is presented as a model of discipline, with all organs obeying the brain; disobedience results in paralysis. Historically, the violation of boundaries has brought crises and conflict. The text notes that modern political, social, and religious organizations suffer from a lack of discipline, and the shift from joint to nuclear families has weakened familial authority and introduced problems. The Terapanth Dharma Sangh is highlighted for its unique "Maryada Mahotsav" (Festival of Discipline), celebrated annually. Unlike other festivals, this one honors the sect's constitution, established nearly 250 years ago by Acharya Bhikshu. The text emphasizes that these rules are not imposed but voluntarily accepted, and their continued observance is a rare example in the modern age. A story about Confucius illustrates true mastery. When a Chinese emperor visited him, Confucius did not rise, claiming he himself was the emperor. The emperor, angered, pointed to his army and wealth. Confucius replied that armies are for those with enemies, servants for the dependent, and wealth for the needy. He possessed contentment and had no enemies. He added that he was not yet a complete emperor because he still wore a loincloth, indicating a remaining attachment. The emperor realized that one who has conquered oneself is the true emperor.

Conclusion

The document underscores that the erosion of boundaries—whether in nature, society, or personal conduct—inevitably leads to chaos and destruction, as illustrated by natural disasters and societal breakdowns. Conversely, the consistent observance of discipline and limits, as exemplified by the Terapanth Dharma Sangh’s centuries-old tradition of the "Maryada Mahotsav," provides a proven model for stability and harmony. The implications are clear: for individuals, families, and nations, adherence to self-imposed, heartily accepted principles is not a restriction but a safeguard against disintegration. The outcome of embracing such discipline is a resilient, organized existence, while its absence fosters conflict and decline. This framework offers a timeless lesson that true strength lies not in power or wealth, but in self-mastery and respect for boundaries.
