Summary
This short piece describes a recently discovered image from Bodh Gaya. The sculpture depicts the Buddha in bhūmi‑sparśa mudrā (earth‑touching gesture) at the moment of enlightenment, surrounded by miniature scenes of the temptations by Māra. The author analyses stylistic features such as the treatment of the halo, the folds of the robe and the rendering of the throne, comparing them with Gupta‑period examples. He suggests that the image may belong to a transitional phase between the late Gupta and early Pāla styles. An appendix provides a catalogue description of the image with measurements, material and provenance.
