By Ram Vallabh Somani

Vol. 11 · No. 1-41982-1983pp. 37-38English

Summary

This brief historical note focuses on Vijayarāja, a ruler from the Paramāra dynasty who governed the fort city of Jalore in Rajasthan. The article places Vijayarāja within the broader context of the Paramāra house, a branch of which ruled Jalore from the late tenth century until the end of the twelfth centuryhttps://lotusarise.com/paramaras-polity-and-administration-upsc/#:~:text=,and%20the%20other%20in%20Bhinmal. Drawing on inscriptions and literary sources, the author reconstructs Vijayarāja’s lineage and examines his political relationships with neighbouring powers such as the Chaulukyas and Chāhamānas. The paper highlights Jalore’s strategic importance as a fortress and its role in regional trade. It also notes the cultural achievements of the Paramāras, including patronage of temples and literature. Although little is known about Vijayarāja’s reign, the article argues that his rule illustrates the complexities of Rajput polity in medieval Rajasthan.

Conclusion

By situating Vijayarāja within the lineage of the Jalore Paramāras, the note underscores the importance of regional dynasties in the political history of Rajasthan. It shows that even lesser‑known rulers contributed to the cultural and military landscape of the period.
