Significance of Geometry in the R̥gveda

This paper explores the presence of geometric concepts in the R̥gveda, arguing that the hymns reveal an implicit understanding of shapes, measures and spatial relationships that would later be codified in the Śulba Sūtras. The author assembles references to circles, squares and triangular arrangements in rituals and shows how Vedic priests used geometric reasoning when constructing fire‑altars (vedis) and measurement cords. The circular altar symbolised the earth while the square represented the heavens; combining these shapes expressed the union of the cosmic and the terrestrial. Hymns describing the eagle‑shaped altar, the metre‑based layout of bricks and the arrangement of sacrificial grounds illustrate practical geometry in service of cosmology. Numbers such as 360 and 720, referring to the days and nights of the year, show an awareness of cyclic patterns and symmetrical division. Although the R̥gveda predates the explicit mathematical rules found in later Vedic literature, its ritual context nurtured ideas about proportion, symmetry and transformation. The paper concludes that geometry in ancient India did not originate from abstract speculation but from the tangible requirements of sacred architecture and time‑keeping, and that recognising this heritage is essential for understanding the evolution of Indian mathematical thought.

Geometric ideas emerged from the need to align human activity with cosmic order through the construction of altars and the partitioning of time.
