Rāmcaritābhidratnam: A Literary Juggler

By Satyavrat Verma

Vol. 362013pp. 59-66English

Summary

The article presents a critical appreciation of the little‑known text Rāmcaritābhidratnam, a creative re‑imagining of the Rāmāyaṇa story. The author characterises the work as a “literary juggler” because of its virtuoso use of language, narrative and poetic devices. Through puns, alliteration, metaphor and skilful switching between registers, the poet breathes new life into familiar episodes. The author analyses selected passages to show how the text condenses complex events into compact verses without sacrificing dramatic tension. There is a playful intertextuality: well‑known Sanskrit verses are echoed and twisted, and vernacular idioms are woven into a classical frame. The retelling often centres characters who receive little attention in Valmiki’s epic, allowing fresh psychological insights and moral nuances. The article situates the Rāmcaritābhidratnam within the broader tradition of regional Rāmāyaṇa literature and argues that its creativity exemplifies the adaptability of epic narratives. By highlighting the craftsmanship of this work, the author invites further study of less prominent Rāmāyaṇa renderings and the cultural contexts that produced them.

Conclusion

Rāmcaritābhidratnam shows that the Rāmāyaṇa continues to inspire inventive retellings that both preserve and transform the epic. The poet’s artful manipulation of language and narrative demonstrates the flexibility of classical forms and their capacity to accommodate local voices. Recognising such works broadens our appreciation of India’s plural literary heritage.
